The National Head Start Association (NHSA) is a nonprofit that works towards policy and institutional changes to ensure high-quality education for young children in poverty. They needed a website that delivered a compelling narrative of the Head Start movement that was also a useful resource for those already entrenched in it's work.
The design studio MSDS brought me on to lead UX for the new responsive website. I conducted user interviews of their target audiences, researched best practices of similar organizations, prioritized content and features, and created wireframes.
From the teachers in the field to the families they served, the goals of different audiences varied widely when visiting the old website. I conducted user interviews of 10 different audience segments, and used the learnings to guide us in prioritizing the content and features for the new site.
I created a site map and wireframes, including how things would scale from mobile to desktop. I designed the wireframes with a templated system to help content creators easily update the site with events, news and research.
The non-profit was made up of four Centers which were separate from each other but worked towards common goals. Initially each Center wanted it's own website, but we were able to compromise by designing a flexible landing page with customized sub-navigation for each.
Here are some samples of the final design by MSDS, you can also view it live here.
